Mayor Bensouda made a surprise visit to Latrikunda Sabiji School after hearing rumors of the poor sanitary conditions. We found that the school has 2574 students that share 6 toilets and 21 classrooms causing a sanitation and congestion nightmare.
The student to teacher ratio is 70 students to a teacher (a new norm in the KM) making the learning environment almost impossible. Infrastructure problems such as broken roofs, broken septic tanks are rampant. the entire school has only one working tap which doesn’t have water pressure during the day.
Sadly, this is a common issue in schools within the municipality.
Having seen the conditions, I have tasked the education committee to:
1) Write to the ministry of education to raise the need for urgent intervention.
2) Take an inventory of all school toilets to begin planning for fundraising in order to work on its renovation.
3) We also asked the councilor of the area to begin the process to purchase a new pump for the school Borehole.
It was a sad day and We urge the National Assembly to look into the state of schools within the KM.
The president of Madison City also committed to take up the issue on his return to Madison.
